Tutor Profile
Amanda Slater - Mix Media
I have loved craft, drawing and painting from a young age. I chose teaching as my profession, but art is my passion. Over the years I have done many workshops and formal art studies in printmaking, drawing and painting. This layering of knowledge & experience is like making a mixed-Media painting, a layering of ideas in texture, print, paint, and papers.
I have chosen Mixed Media art as my preferred style as it gives me the opportunity to be creative using any art or craft material. I find inspiration through looking at the artwork of some iconic painting names from history like Gustav Klimt and Henri Matisse as well as the unique style of Frida Kahlo. I am drawn to using a bright and vibrant palette especially the hot fluorescent colours in my art works. This reflects the bright colours of nature that I experienced growing up as a child in Coolangatta. I create art because I enjoy the process of building up an image until it becomes a finished whole.
During the creative process I think and concentrate only on my artwork…it makes me happy! My favourite subjects are flowers, portraits, and birds. An experiment in painting a pair of stone-Curlews has led me to start a series of ‘Birds of Brisbane’ which has proven to be popular!
My mentor is Gloria Clay based at Yurara Art Society. Gloria introduced me to the joys of creating mixed-media images about 5 years ago. There is always something new and interesting to explore with a group of like-minded creatives. I am a life-long learner. I hope you enjoy looking at my art as much as I enjoyed creating it.
